Minh Le remembers his birthday call in 2004 as the "call of tears." He was working on a master's degree in computer science at the University of Memphis when his wife telephoned from Vietnam. "Instead I heard my wife crying. I asked her a dozen times what had happened, but she did not answer," he says. Their chubby-cheeked baby, Tigo, had been diagnosed as profoundly deaf.
